These tunes were chosen from a handful of gigs we did while in residency at the Gallery Cabaret in Chicago over the period of 2006 to about 2008. Once a month on a Monday night we would all get together and play my original compositions, work out the kinks and have the opportunity to shape them in front of an audience. But every once in a while I would drop playing my tunes in favor of calling out some random standards and just have fun.

The playing is raw, unedited, explorative and at times displays a humor that I find expresses the real essence of jazz. And even though the tunes have a rough and unpolished veneer, there are moments that shine through and capture the beauty and complexity only jazz can convey.

So I present these tunes to be heard in the spirit in which they were played. Just some guys playing on a Monday night, enjoying the opportunity to spontaneously revisit some old classics. If you have a listen, turn up the volume (preferably wearing headphones) and enjoy.

the artists seem to downplay their achievement as something they just tossed together in the living room during pandemic lock down. Yet, it is a highly original take on the classic drums/sax duo. A huge range of musical ground is covered, and emotional content. A great album in any context, I listen to it often. bob3
